FAQs

How is this process different from Traditional Marriage Counseling or Couples Therapy?

Couple together at homeIn traditional marriage counseling or couples therapy, the process is initiated in reaction to specific relationship conflicts or problems. These issues are referred to as the presenting problem. The couple often enters counseling with significant amounts of anger and frustration. The counselor/therapist uses their training, experience and intuition to diagnose the root causes of the presenting problem. Over time, the anger and frustration dissipates and eventually a productive environment is achieved. This process often involves an open ended commitment to an undefined number of once a week therapy sessions.

In relationship education the process is proactive not reactive. Couples initiate the process desiring to significantly improve their relationships. This puts positive, future-oriented focus on realizing relational potentials. The goal is to maximize potentials for growth, not rehash past problems. The instructor utilizes the data gathered from scientific assessment instruments to identify specific areas with growth potential. This objective data is then combined with the instructor's training, experience and intuition to develop a personalized curriculum for each couple. A productive non-defensive environment is established in the initial consultation. This process utilizes a clearly agreed upon amount of time and resources. The pace of the process (number of sessions and length of sessions) is highly flexible and totally in the control of the couple and the instructor.

When insurance claims are involved, the therapist must diagnose one or both of the partners with some specific psychological disorder. This diagnosis must be presented to a third party and becomes a part of the person's permanent medical records. A therapist may also be required to share more detailed personal information with an insurance company or a third party administrator.

The relationship education process is totally confidential. No insurance companies or third party administrators are involved. No one is labeled as having some form of disorder or identified as the primary cause of the couple's problems. No information is required to be shared with a third party or made a permanent part of any medical records.
